In 1951, George Cable was called to be Bethel’s first full-time pastor. The next step of faith was to build a parsonage. This building was dedicated to the Lord in August, 1952. This group continued faithfully to proclaim the gospel, while taking on partial support of various missionaries as they were able, making this church on the corner, a lighthouse for the Lord.

   The congregation felt a burden for a Baptist Church in the city of Tomah, Wisconsin. Bible classes were started on January 4, 1953 under the direction of Pastor Cable. (Tomah Baptist Church is now located at 1701 Hollister Ave, in Tomah, Wisconsin.)

   On September 8, 1954, Bethel voted to help in the starting of a Baptist Church in Sparta, Wisconsin. (Calvary Baptist Church is now located at 601 West Montgomery Ave. in Sparta, Wisconsin.)

   November 11, 1059, plans were accepted to remodel and enlarge the front entrance of the church under the ministry of Rev. Bob Hess. At this time, a Nursery and Restrooms were added. During the early 1960’s, under the ministries of Rev. Lloyd Wages and Rev. Ole Refsell, it became evident more space was needed for an auditorium and Sunday School rooms. It was a time of growth for the church. There was a large young people’s group. Many people, young and old, were baptized and joined the church.

“The young people’s organization of the 1950’s was tremendous! (At least we kids though so!) We met every Saturday night. Pastor George Cable organized, promoted and advised our group, although other adults helped as well. Our meetings were structured yet full of fun.  With only one Ping-Pong set and many players, we thought up “Round-Table Ping Pong,” yet we had no official Ping-Pong table, so we ran around a narrow basement table. What fun!!! Pastor Cable gave us all jobs and duties. He kept us active in every form of church life. He also organized this group into the church’s first ball team. Interaction between pastor, church and the youth of the 50’s was wonderful, fun-filled, and Spirit-led! What a wonderful memory I have.” --Joanne Frei Jones
